Prominent Savannah Historian, Collector Paul Blatner dead

BlatnerUniformSAVANNAH, Ga. – Howard Paul Blatner, known as Paul to his friends, died June 16 in Savannah after a short illness. He was 58.

Blatner’s father, the late Howard Lee Blatner, got his son interested in collecting antique bottles and historical artifacts at an early age and Paul never outgrew his passion for new discoveries of old objects.

Paul attended Armstrong State College in Savannah and earned a double masters degree from George Washington University. He was a charter member of the Coastal Empire History Hunters Association and the Savannah Archeological Club.

He was a co-founder and first curator of the Great Savannah Exposition, now called the Savannah History Museum. He also was the owner of Blatner’s Antiques for many years.

He is survived by his sister, Jacky B. Yglesias, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Graveside service were conducted June 19 att Bonaventure Cemetery. The family requests memorials be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 520 Washington Avenue, Savannah, GA 31405.
